About Gerard Hegarty

From Code to Composition

By day, I am a Full-Stack Software Engineer immersed in the world of logic and digital architecture. By weekend, I trade the screen for the viewfinder. What started as a hobby has evolved into a deep-seated passion for Landscape and Cityscape Photography across Northern Ireland.

I created this website to document my journey as I transition from an amateur enthusiast to a more serious, narrative-driven photographer. While my professional life is built on code, my creative life is built on capturing the rugged beauty of the Irish coastline and the hidden geometric stories within our urban architecture.

My Gear & Process

I believe that the best camera is the one you have with you, but when I’m out in the field, I rely on my Canon EOS 7D Mark II and my Canon EOS 2000D. My current kit allows me to cover a wide range of perspectives:

  • EF 50mm f/1.8 STM: The “Nifty Fifty” for sharp details and low-light street scenes. This is the lens I use almost constantly. Its small compact frame means that it is light and easy to carry
  • EF 70-200mm F/4 L IS USM: My go to for compressing landscapes and isolating distant subjects with professional-grade clarity. This is my heaviest lens and makes travel photography difficult.

The Next Chapter: Storytelling

While I am comfortable capturing the stillness of a building or a sunset, my current focus is on growth. I am actively working to move beyond “pretty pictures” and into the realm of photojournalism and visual storytelling.

My goal is to have my work featured in local and national news outlets, capturing the spirit of life in Northern Ireland as it happens. Every gallery on this site is a step toward that goal, a record of my technical improvement and my evolving eye for the “decisive moment.”
